The recently coined term “decarbonization” comes from the fight against climate change. The concept refers to all actions, measures and techniques that an industry or individual puts in place to limit carbon dioxide emissions—the infamous CO2—and other greenhouse gases. In other words, decarbonization is about reducing one’s carbon footprint in order to mitigate the impact on the world’s climate.

Quebec’s Plan for a Green Economy aims to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 37.5% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. The heating of buildings is one of the sectors to be improved quickly since it alone is responsible for 10% of Quebec’s GHGs.

Énergir is prepared to take action and has adopted a vision on 2030  that sets out an ambitious work plan. The company is committed to decarbonization through the complementarity of energy sources, optimization of energy efficiency, and development of renewable natural gas. Such a vital and important project cannot be done alone. It requires the collaboration of its partners and, most importantly, that of its customers.

Dual Energy

A new solution is being offered by Énergir and Hydro-Québec: a dual-energy initiative with electricity and natural gas. The reason the two companies have chosen to join forces is that they believe this partnership is essential to decarbonization, at the lowest possible cost, for society. Customers who opt for dual energy also become partners in the fight against climate change.

A 70% reduction in our fossil fuel consumption is a major step forward!

Your carbon footprint as an Énergir customer is significantly improved by switching to dual energy. Calculations show that using electricity as the primary source of heat reduces fuel consumption by about 70%.

Dual energy consists of using two types of energy for the heating system: electricity, as the main source, and natural gas. In very cold weather (below -12oC to -15oC depending on the region), the unit automatically switches to natural gas. As a result, customers give a break to an already overloaded power grid during peak energy times.

Hydro-Québec’s grid is currently approaching full capacity. Electricity demand is increasing: the transportation sector is also making the transition and industries are striving to improve their energy efficiency scorecards.

The use of dual energy helps to meet residential energy needs in an optimal way—all while acting now to curb climate change, reduce costs to society, and decrease the need to build new electrical infrastructure.

You can further reduce the use of fossil fuels by choosing renewable natural gas (RNG) to meet all your natural gas needs. RNG is created with organic materials from domestic, agricultural and industrial waste. The RNG creation cycle valorizes elements that were previously seen as waste and not as valuable resources.

A simple fact: with Énergir, you can take action to make the planet greener—and at a better price.
