2015-2030 Maritime strategy - Énergir is pleased with the action plan announced today by the Government

June 29, 2015 - Press releases

Montréal, June 29, 2015 – Gaz Métro welcomes the action plan announced this morning by the Government of Québec at the launch of the Maritime Strategy aimed, among other things, at promoting the use and transportation of more sustainable energy sources, including liquefied natural gas (LNG).

"Gaz Métro applauds Québec's first-ever maritime strategy, which includes fostering the use of natural gas as fuel—a key driver of Québec's sustainable economic development," said Stéphanie Trudeau, Vice President, Strategy, Communication and Sustainability at Gaz Métro. "Natural gas is a concrete solution for fighting climate change and allows local shipowners to comply with the increasingly stringent standards regarding polluting emissions on North America's waterways."

The use of liquefied natural gas makes it possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 25%, compared with marine diesel oil, in addition to almost completely eliminating fine particle emissions and other air pollutants. LNG motors are also quieter and produce less vibration, which is more respectful of marine life. Remember that the Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) opted for LNG to fuel its three new ferries, which are to be put into service over the next few months. Also, this high-performance, economical and cleaner fuel is a proven technology widely used for many years in road and maritime transport worldwide, particularly in Europe.

In support of the Plan Nord, LNG also makes it possible to provide cleaner energy to industries, mines and communities located outside the gas network. The Stornoway diamond company, for example, will be using LNG as its main energy source for its Renard project located in Nord-du-Québec.
