Énergir honoured for its disclosure efforts in the face of climate change challenges

October 10, 2007 - Press releases

Montreal, October 10, 2007 - Énergir was recognized today by the Carbon Disclosure Project as a Canadian leader in disclosure in the face of the challenges posed by climate change. This important recognition means that it will now be a member of the Climate Disclosure Leadership index, which includes 16 Canadian companies chosen for their excellent communications efforts.

"I felt very proud when I learned that an organization like the Carbon Disclosure Project had decided to recognize Énergir’s voluntary efforts in environmental communications,” said Sophie Brochu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Énergir. "For more than 10 years, we have endeavoured to have state-of-the-art practices in this domain. It is therefore very gratifying to note that the value we accord such efforts is shared on a much broader scale,” she added.

Énergir has earned this distinction thanks to the concerted efforts of its partners. The company decided to bank on forging a solid bond of trust with representatives from civil society in order to tackle environmental issues. A sustained dialogue has been established with them, which has enabled us to turn the climate change challenge into an attractive opportunity for our customers. Énergir has been voluntarily reducing its own greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 1994 and, in 12 years, those efforts have led to a 28% reduction in emissions from the 1990 level. These efforts were then extended to all its customers with the introduction of the Energy Efficiency Plan and the Energy Efficiency Fund in 2000, the first initiatives of their kind for a Québec energy distribution company. To date, they have helped customers who participate to significantly reduce their natural gas consumption.

The Carbon Disclosure Project, a coalition of global investors with more than US$41 trillion in assets, now has 315 signatories and is working to encourage the development of strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
