March 26, 2009 - Press releases
Montréal, March 26 2009 – On Saturday, March 28, 2009, Énergir will participate in Earth Hour by turning off the logo and general lighting at its Montréal Head Office between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Énergir will thus be joining a planetary movement to raise awareness of climate change. Through this symbolic gesture, the company is showing by example what can be done every single day to save energy and thus contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
“Earth Hour underscores the importance of citizen participation by individuals and companies in helping sustainable development by putting the accent on the importance of saving energy. This corresponds perfectly with what Énergir has been saying and doing for many years, and thus it is natural for us to take part,” explains Guylaine Lehoux, Vice-President, Growth, who is chief company officer responsible for sustainable development.
Security lights and lights where employees are working on network surveillance will stay on during Earth Hour.
Concrete commitment to climate change
Énergir's participation in Earth Hour is one in a series of actions the company is taking to contribute to the fight against climate change and it encourages its employees to do the same. For example, a campaign was launched on Monday, March 23, to invite all the company's employees to join in Défi Climat for a second consecutive year.
Also, Énergir has already installed movement detectors to ensure that they are only lighted when in use.
As part of the renovation of Head Office, which led to a request for LEED accreditation from the Canada Green Building Council, new heating and air-conditioning systems with improved performance were installed, which resulted in a reduction of 1,425 tonnes of CO2 eq. emissions in the first year of use, exceeding the targets set.
In 2007, Énergir's greenhouse gas emissions were 23.2% below their 1990 level, equal to almost four times the Canadian objective under the Kyoto Protocol.
Finally, in 2008 Énergir came first out of the 106 Canadian companies which responded to the invitation from the Carbon Disclosure Project to disclose their greenhouse gas and climate change emissions.
