August 30, 2010 - Press releases
Montreal, August 30, 2010 – Énergir is satisfied with the announcement made yesterday by Pierre Arcand, Quebec's Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks, and Nathalie Normandeau, Deputy Premier and Minister of Natural Resources and Wildlife, as it ensures the structured pursuit of the demonstration phase of natural gas production in Quebec – a key step aimed at establishing the economic potential of this source of energy located in Quebec and supporting the initiatives that promote its development. This announcement by the Quebec government regarding an action plan to oversee the shale gas industry will make it possible to continue to research and implement projects that demonstrate the potential of this important opportunity for Quebec.
In doing this, the government is underscoring the importance of exploring a variety of avenues to ensure energy security. The existence of natural gas in Quebec could contribute positively to diversifying the supply of natural gas, thus benefiting thousands of customers. Natural gas is an essential source of energy for heating schools and hospitals as well as numerous households and businesses in Quebec.
Role of Énergir
As the sole distributor of natural gas in Quebec (except in the Outaouais region), Énergir does not engage in any natural gas exploration or production activity. Énergir's expertise and experience lie in the construction and operation of safe, reliable natural gas facilities in Quebec via a system that spans more than 10,000 kilometres. Énergir plans to extend its existing system to production sites in order to recover and distribute the natural gas available in Quebec. As is the case for all its construction projects, these initiatives will uphold environmental values and comply with applicable laws and standards.
With over $3.6 billion in assets, Énergir is Quebec's leading natural gas distributor. Operating in this regulated industry for over 50 years, Énergir has become the trusted energy provider to some 180,000 customers in Quebec and 136,000 customers in Vermont while developing the skills and expertise needed to diversify beyond natural gas. Énergir's prudent growth strategy has been marked by the successful entry into electricity distribution in Vermont and development of wind power projects in Quebec. www.gazmetro.com
