  • Simple

No new equipment needed. This renewable energy is 100% interchangeable with natural gas. You can choose what percentage of renewable natural gas (RNG) to include in your annual natural gas consumption.
  • Flexible

Select a date that works for you to begin your renewable natural gas consumption. Later on, you can easily change the RNG ratio or simply stop it altogether. You simply need to give a 60-day notice in writing.
  • Fast

Your RNG request will be processed within 7 to 30 days. You will be sent a notice of acceptance to confirm your consumption parameters.

How much does renewable natural gas cost?

RNG is a cost-competitive energy compared with other renewable energies. The RNG rate effective from January 1 to September 30, 2022 is $13.92/GJ (52.729 ¢/m3).
The rate is fixed for one year and is regulated by the Régie de l’énergie. The RNG rate can thus be modified from year to year.

Other components included in the natural gas bill are applied in accordance with rates approved by the Régie de l’Énergie, with the exception of Quebec’s Cap-and-Trade system (CATS) fee, which is not charged for RNG consumption. For example, a company that consumes 50,000 m3 of RNG will save $2,365 on CATS fees.

A few concrete examples:
  • Heating a medium-sized residence: Incorporating 5% of RNG into annual consumption represents an increase of approximately $3/month* (based on current prices).
  • Heating a small business or 10-unit building: Incorporating 5% of RNG into annual consumption (41,500 m3) represents an increase of approximately $46/month*.
*According to the current rate.

Costs associated with renewable natural gas: FAQs

Why is there a price difference between natural gas and renewable natural gas? The difference in renewable natural gas (RNG) and natural gas prices is due to their different production processes and the cost of new infrastructure to meet growing the demand.

Is RNG a form of renewable energy approved by the governments of Quebec and Canada? Yes, renewable natural gas (RNG) is approved by both governments. Quebec’s Ministère de l'Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques (MELCC) and the Treasury Board of Canada recognize the use of RNG as a viable solution for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction. RNG also fits in with State plans to lead by example. In addition, funding for RNG projects, outlined in Quebec’s Plan for a Green Economy presented last year, will contribute to the development of new supply sources. In fact, the Government of Quebec plans to invest $213 million to support the emerging RNG industry.

How can I be sure that I am actually using renewable natural gas?Renewable natural gas (RNG) and regular natural gas circulate in the same gas system, where the molecules blend together. When you agree to purchase a certain volume of RNG, you will be guaranteed that this amount has been injected into the system, replacing an equivalent proportion of regular natural gas.
The volume of renewable natural gas included in your total consumption will be itemized on your bill.

Does my equipment need to be modified to use renewable natural gas? No investment or changes to the equipment are needed since RNG is interchangeable with natural gas. RNG meets our quality standards and can therefore be used for the same purposes.

Can renewable natural gas be used by all your customers? Yes, all Énergir customers can use RNG, with the exception of those with fixed-price direct purchase contracts.

Can I change my percentage of renewable natural gas at any time? Yes, you can change your RNG consumption or stop it at any time with 60 days’ notice. You must send your notice by email to gnr@energir.com stating the desired date change, the revised percentage of RNG, your account number and the delivery address registered in your account.
