Extension of the gas network between Bellechasse and Montmagny

In recent years, the RCMs of Montmagny and Bellechasse as well as the local business community have mobilized to have the natural gas network extended to supply businesses and industries in the sector. In response to this action, and to support the regions’ economic development, the government provided $47.6M in financial assistance for the extension of the gas network from Saint-Henri-de-Lévis to Montmagny.

The project at a glance

The project consists of an 80 km extension of the natural gas distribution network. The work will be carried out from May to December 2020 by the contractor Pomerleau. The arrival of natural gas in the region will result in an annual reduction of more than 2,000 tonnes of GHGs, in addition to significantly reducing emissions of air pollutants. 

Over the long term, this gas network extension project will provide the Chaudière-Appalaches region with the infrastructure and potential to participate in Québec’s energy transition with the production and consumption of local and renewable natural gas.

Project route

The natural gas pipeline will be buried mainly in municipal road or Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) rights of way. The municipalities served will be Saint-Charles-de-Bellechasse, Saint-Raphael, Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud and Montmagny.

  • 4 Pressure regulator stations

    They will be used to regulate pressure on the network and will be installed at the entrance to the various neighbourhoods, near the following intersections:

    • Avenue Royale and Rue Asselin in Saint-Charles-de-Bellechasse;
    • Route 281 and Rang du Bras in Saint-Raphael;
    • Chemin Saint-François East and Montée de Morigeau in Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud;
    • Chemin des Poirier and Chemin du Coteau in Montmagny.
  • 4 Valve stations

    They will be used to isolate the network if needed and will be located near the following intersections:

    • Route Campagna and Chemin Trait-Carré in Saint-Henri;
    • Route 279 and Rang du Sud-Est in Saint-Charles-de-Bellechasse;
    • 5e Rang, near Highway 281 in La Durantaye;
    • Chemin Saint-François West in Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud.
  • Supply network

    • Materials: steel 
    • Diameter: 4 in. and 8 in.
    • Installation: mainly on public rights of way
    • Length: 55 km
  • Distribution system

    • Materials: plastic (polyethylene)
    • Diameter: 4 in. and 8 in.

Generally, work is performed between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, from May to December 2020, with the exception of statutory holidays. As always, Énergir intends to make every effort necessary to minimize any inconvenience this work might cause.

Traffic obstructions are to be expected. For narrower streets, only local traffic will be permitted, and detours will be put in place for other road users. Dedicated staff will direct traffic and ensure the safe travel of road users. In addition, the work will be carried out sequentially to minimize impacts on the entire project route.

Residents affected by the work done on their street will receive a letter to inform them more precisely of the impacts to be expected and the measures implemented to mitigate them. This work is carefully planned, monitored and performed by our engineering and construction teams. Evaluations are also conducted so as to address specific concerns.

The risks of this type of work are no different from those found on any construction site. The “natural gas” factor only comes into play at the very end of the work, when the new pipeline is put into service. This type of work is performed regularly by our teams, who are trained in the use of safe procedures. In the event of an emergency, we are trained to respond quickly and effectively in collaboration with the emergency services.

Natural gas

  • Natural gas is 95% methane (CH4).
  • Methane is produced in nature by living organisms and decomposing organic substances.
  • It is lighter than air and disperses into the atmosphere when released.
  • It is naturally odourless. We add mercaptan, a substance that releases a similar smell to rotten eggs, which makes it possible to detect it at very low concentrations in the air (less than 1%).
  • Natural gas is not toxic or water soluble.

Advantages of natural gas

By replacing petroleum products and coal, natural gas helps to reduce greenhouse gases by 32%. Natural gas emits significantly fewer atmospheric pollutants and makes it possible to eliminate nearly all sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), pollutants which are, among other things, responsible for acid rain and health problems.
