Énergir is committed to a more energy-efficient future

Énergir and its subsidiaries are actively committed to a more energy-efficient future, and are involved in a variety of innovative projects such as the production of solar and wind power, renewable natural gas, natural gas as fuel and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Énergir also wants to encourage Québecers to consume more efficiently by promoting a more complementary use of energies to successfully meet energy challenges.

Our responsibilities in the fight against climate change

Climate change is a reality. It is caused mainly by an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gas (GHG) in the atmosphere. This phenomenon can be attributed to human activity, specifically to the use of fossil fuels. If businesses in the energy sector are part of the problem, they also need to be part of the solution, and Énergir is fully aware of this reality.

Who emits GHG?

The transportation industry is Québec’s largest GHG emitter, at 43% of total emissions. The industrial sector is second, at 30% of the total. Together, these two sectors alone account for nearly 75% of the province’s GHG emissions.*

An ambitious GHG reduction target

Québec has set an objective of reducing its GHG emissions by 37.5% by 2030 versus its 1990 levels. In its Environmental Policy, Énergir undertakes to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions beyond the targets set in Québec’s commitments.

Solutions for achieving Québec’s target

Énergir offers promising and feasible solutions to fight climate change. We estimate that by maximizing our efforts to make them a reality, we can significantly help to reduce total GHG.

Encouraging energy efficiency

… by stepping up our energy efficiency efforts alongside our customers. Since 2001, Énergir and many of its customers have helped carry out more than 130,000 energy efficiency projects. Their work has resulted in a reduction of more than 1.1 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Since the only truly green energy is the one we succeed in doing without, we want to double this result by 2030.

Focusing on the value of natural gas rather than its volume

Énergir sincerely believes in the complementary use of energies and in the principle of the right energy in the right place, at the right time and at the lowest cost. By adopting this principle, we can reduce our dependence on petroleum products and better manage peak energy demand.

Québec is fortunate to have hydroelectricity as an energy resource, but since some needs today cannot be met with electrical power, we want to focus our efforts where we have a competitive advantage, both environmentally and economically.

Accelerating the injection of renewable gas into our system

For several years now, Énergir has been working to promote the development of renewable natural gas in Québec, to reach 10% by 2030. Renewable natural gas gives your table scraps and agricultural and forestry waste a second life, which reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. The renewable natural gas produced from this waste can be injected into our existing gas network to meet customers’ energy needs in an increasingly sustainable way.

Our energies

We believe diversity is key to the future of energy. This is why Énergir is involved in developing renewable, liquefied and compressed natural gas, solar and wind power and hydroelectricity.
  • Natural gas

Énergir is the largest gas distributor in Québec and Vermont.
  • Renewable natural gas

Renewable natural gas produced from organic matter.

  • Liquefied natural gas

LNG is natural gas that changes from a gaseous to a liquid state.
  • Compressed natural gas

CNG is compressed natural gas that can be used as fuel.
  • Wind power

Investments in several wind farms in Québec and Vermont.
  • Solar power

Solar farm, energy efficiency programs and other innovative projects.
  • Hydroelectricity

Hydroelectricity production through our U.S. subsidiary.
  • Cow power

Producing electricity takes an unexpected form in Vermont.
