You can convert to dual energy with the contractor of your choice. If you need trusted references, take advantage of the expertise of our certified partners. We can suggest several qualified professionals in your area. These certified partners can even offer to deduct your subsidies directly from the invoice.
During your selection process, we strongly advise you to compare different suppliers. This will enable you to compare various important elements such as costs, service and work availability.
Timescales vary enormously from one situation to another. Certain factors contribute to these variations, such as the availability of your contractor to carry out the work, and Hydro-Québec's availability in the event of power grid upgrades.
That said, the takeover phase proceeds quickly. Following your initial contact request, a certified natural gas partner will call you back within 48 hours. The subsidy payment process is equally rapid. As soon as your electrician confirms your conversion to dual-energy, you'll receive the subsidies within about 30 days.
Most of our residential customers prefer to convert their heating system to dual-energy in early spring, by adding an electric heat pump. That way, they can take advantage of the low dual-energy rate all summer long, and stay cool with air conditioning. If your natural gas heating system is aging, you may want to consider replacing it before the winter heating season begins.
To help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The heating of buildings is a major source of GHGs, which has a direct impact on climate change. By joining forces, Hydro-Québec and Énergir aim to reduce participants' natural gas consumption by just over 70%, to help Quebec achieve the GHG reduction target set out in the Plan for a Green Economy 2030. This target corresponds to a 37.5% reduction in emissions by 2030, compared with 1990 levels.
Electric heating of buildings creates significant pressure on the Hydro-Québec network during winter peak consumption periods. Dual energy is an excellent way of maximizing the share of electricity in building heating, while limiting the impact on peak demand. Reducing the demand for electricity at these precise times optimizes the operation of the network when it is most in demand. In this way, Hydro-Québec can avoid the need for additional investment or expenditure to meet peak demand.
Over the period 2022-2030, the dual-energy offer will therefore save Quebec society almost $1.7 billion compared with an all-electric scenario, which would have a much greater impact on rates.[VG1]
